TOM FOX MEMORIAL PLEDGE AWARD

Tom Fox was a leader of his peers and an outstanding athlete. In high school, he played basketball and baseball. But in his senior year, his activities were cut short by an incurable cancer. This did not stop him from becoming Student Body President at Redlands High School.

His father was a UofR and Kappa Sigma Sigma alum, so Redlands was his first choice for college. He was admitted to the University of Redlands with honors.  Buoyed up by his fighting spirit, he played freshman basketball and gained widespread respect throughout the university.

In the Fall of 1960, Tom pledged Kappa Sigma Sigma. He was pledge captain for his class. 1960 was the first year of a completely revised pledging process due to the implementing of new state laws regarding hazing. Tom and his fellow pledges were reported to be the most united group ever to go over the High Sierras. His enthusiasm and attitude served as an inspiration to his pledge class and the active chapter.

Tom passed away on Dec. 12, 1960. His Redlands High School counselor Miss Mildred Stevens remembered him as such: "I don't think Tom ever met a stranger in his life because he would never let anyone remain so."

In 1961 the Tom Fox Memorial Pledge Award was established in his honor to be presented annually to a newly inducted brother who, like Tom, typifies the ideals of Kappa Sigma Sigma. The award is presented at the Rendezvous.
