In 1916, seven young men, Donald A. Mitchell, Leo E. Sievert, James S. Leonard, E. O. Kincher, Victor L. Jones, F. Lessyl Trine, F. Leonard Cooper, Elwood D. Bayerle, S. Guy Jones, William B. Backlund, Fred D. Fagg Jr., Herman W. Nixon, William E. Lockwood, and Allen H. Whitney agreed upon the formation of the new fraternity which would have high ideals and be helpful to the University & Community.
In short, Kappa Sigma Sigma formed because good men chose to act and lead.
Leonard Cooper was elected as the First President and was an energetic and diplomatic leader, the Birds aimed to uphold high ideals and foster brotherhood. Sawyer Hall was secured as the first fraternity house. During this period the official colors were selected and the pin was designed by Fred D. Fagg, Jr. Through dedication and strategic alliances, we gained prominence on campus, eventually winning key positions in student governance. The fraternity headquarters is now known as the “Bird House" and it is located at 1235 Sylvan Blvd.
Amidst the challenges of World War I, Kappa Sigma Sigma continued to grow, welcoming new members and maintaining its activities. With dedicated leadership and support from faculty members like Professor H.E. Marsh and Professor S. Guy Jones, the fraternity thrived; despite wartime circumstances.
In 1919, Fred Fagg assumed leadership, steering the fraternity towards continued success. With each passing year, Kappa Sigma Sigma cements its place as an integral part of campus life at the University of Redlands.
The men of Kappa Sigma Sigma pride ourselves on being the longest lasting greek organization at the University of Redlands. We are the only fraternity at the U of R which has never lost its charter.
Seven young men set the foundation for lifelong growth and development, that framework has since guided more than 1,000 men with the structure to make a positive impact on the community and world.
